Karel DESEURE

Described as a “magician” by NRC, Karel Deseure is a sought-after conductor on both the opera and symphonic stages.

In recent seasons, he has been invited to lead the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Belgian National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de chambre de Lausanne, Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Orchestre National de Cannes, Orchestra of Opera North and Manchester Camerata, working alongside artists including Katia and Marielle Labèque, Anastasia Kobekina, Maximilian Hornung, Bryce Dessner, Marie-Pierre Langlamet, Jonathan Fournel, Dorottya Lang, Christianne Stotijn and Marie Oppert.

The 2026/27 season features several important returns : the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de chambre de Paris, Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, with artists such as Nadine Sierra, Sarah Brady and Alexander Melnikov.
Highlights of the season also include his debut with Orchestre National Avignon-Provence, alongside actor Lambert Wilson.

In November 2026, Actes Sud will release an illustrated book with a recording of Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, performed by the Orchestre National de Cannes under Karel’s direction, Olivier Py as narrator and illustrations by Paul Cox.

Since his debut at Opera Zuid in 2016, conducting Puccini’s La Bohème, Deseure has conducted repertoire ranging from Verdi to Britten, as well as Ravel and Weill, at leading opera houses including Opera North, Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, Dutch National Opera & Ballet, Nederlandse Reisopera, Opera Zuid and Opéra de Toulon.

In 2018, his work in opera was recognised with the prestigious Schaunard Award in the Netherlands.

Since 2019, Karel has been Professor of Conducting at the University of Amsterdam
